Overview
What is a Tutorial?

What is a tutorial?

Curated online learning to provide support for a course

Inside tutorial, students will receive explanations, diagrams, and
example problems structured in a way that effectively teaches the student the concepts needed for the “course” and in a way which the student likes to learn.

Unlike learning in a classroom, we ensure that the environment of the tutorial is one that allows you (the student) to fully interact with me (the teacher) in way that is judgement-free and easy.

During the tutorial, students are encouraged to freely ask questions and suggest material which is misunderstood.

All tutorials also include a video recording of the lesson, and a PDF of all notes attached in an email sent within 24 hours of the lesson. Outside of the tutorial setting, students are also offered daily free online support (by email or Zoom video-chat) with any “course”
suggestions, questions, assignments, test preparation, and follow up from tutorial.

Online support includes help with “course” registration, exam preparation and study tips, review and advice on notes, assignments, lab reports, and answering any impromptu questions you get!

Choose from Lesson Style or Workshop Style

One-on-one tutorials come in two main varieties: Lesson Style and Workshop Style.

In the Lesson Style of tutoring, students get to treat tutorials like a discussion, which is a free environment for the tutor to introduce and review concepts and the student to provide immediate feedback. Students will get a more complete story of the content in the “course” as well as chronological notes on each concept.

This style is recommended for students who need to take similar “course”(s) to the current one in the future and if the student has signed up with substantial time until the end of the “course”. Students who are self teaching themselves and need support in learning topics would benefit from this approach as well.

Lesson Style is not recommended for students who mainly struggle in either setting up problems or test writing.

The Workshop Style tutorials are structured so that the students get a familiarity with putting pen to paper. We focus on solving problems similar to previous assignments, tests, as well as typical problems of the “course”. The student will provide their previous assignments, tests, and notes and we will provide typical problems that are commonly used to test students.

This synthesis, combined with a disciplined study routine works well to prepare students for midterms and final exams. Therefore tutorials will provide more directed information on the content of the “course” and have step-by-step explained written examples for reference.

Workshop style is recommended for students who want a less conceptual understanding of the material, searching for an extraction of the details
